A very flawed and failed politician claimed in a recent campaign that members or followers of the party opposing him were: “WEIRD”
Members of the opposing party declared in response that members of his party were, in fact, the WEIRD ones.
After more than thirty-five years of pastoring folks and many more observing them, I am in agreement with both parties.
I can firmly state that ALL PEOPLE are WEIRD. Some are just WEIRDER than others.
Here is an example. The Powerball jackpot rose to $1.8 billion last night, and two folks won it. A record number of people bought tickets. Three days earlier, a record number of one hundred sixty-two million people had bought tickets. That number represents almost the entire adult population of the United States.
When the jackpot was twenty million, only six million people bought tickets. Hello? The take-home for the twenty million would probably be around five million, and that wouldn’t be life-changing enough? People are WEIRD.
The Jews rejected Jesus because they wanted a warrior king. The modern Pharisees and Sadducees of the works-based, performance doctrine “it’s about what you do, not what Jesus did” religion reject the teachings of Jesus because they dislike His doctrine of salvation and the receipt of His great and precious promises through believing in, and believing Him and His grace. That is the definition of WEIRD.
Believing that you can behave well enough to get God to love and bless you and save you is WEIRD.
Believing part of John 3:16 but rejecting John 3:14,17, and 18 is WEIRD. Check this out:
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted, that WHOEVER BELIEVES and BELIEVES in Him may have eternal life.
For God so loves the world that He gave His one and only Son, that WHOEVER BELIEVES, and BELIEVES in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save it through Him. WHOEVEER BELIEVES in Him is not judged or condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son”.
(John 3:14-18)
Then they asked Him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.”
(John 6:28-29)
Did you notice that Jesus did not say: “YES BUT, you must be baptized, repent, and confess all of your sins first!”
So, how much of the WHOEVER do you buy into? Do you believe that all that God requires of you is to believe and believe in Jesus? Or has religion brainwashed you into adding to the Gospel of “Good News Of Great Joy Which Shall Be To All People”?
It is very hard to believe the TRUTH of Jesus because it is contrary to our judgmental and fleshly way of thinking, and God’s ways are not our ways because His thoughts are above our thoughts and His WAYS are above ours. God’s ways are WEIRD to our flesh minds. Jesus is His Way. If you do choose to believe the Gospel of Jesus, you can understand that it is stunningly good news of great joy.
Creating and teaching and believing a Gospel different from Jesus’s Gospel is just WEIRD! But don’t worry. Jesus loves us so much just the way that we are so much that He died the most awful death anyone ever will, to prove it!
HOW WEIRD IS THAT?
“Whosoever acknowledges me before men, him will I confess before My Father which is in Heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before My Father which is in Heaven.”
(Matthew 10:32-33)
