When the ubiquitous sideline reporter stuck a microphone in the face of LSU Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier last night and asked for His thoughts on upsetting the fourth-ranked Clemson Tigers in their stadium, he didn’t seek glory for himself, his coach, or his team. He seized the opportunity, on national television viewed by several millions of people, to praise and glorify Jesus.
That was the highlight of the opening week of the college football season. There were many great games and exciting visions to ponder that day, but this faithful follower and servant of The King of Kings stole the show for Him.
All of the blather of the professional yakkers and every other message sent on opening day faded into meaningless nonsense as this true believer and worshipper claimed the medium of television, God created to teach His Gospel, for that purpose.
Garrett Nussmeier set an example for all athletes and public figures of what they should do given the same opportunity. Garett knows that God gave him his talents and abilities for one purpose, to acknowledge Him. Garett fulfilled that purpose and I am sure he does that frequently.
At that very instant, something very beautiful happened in the Heavenly realm. The Lord of Lords acknowledged Garett Nussmeier before His Father.
“Whosoever acknowledges me before men, him will I confess before My Father which is in Heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before My Father which is in Heaven.”
(Matthew 10:32-33)
Holy Spirit connected that statement from Jesus with this one that He gave to us through our anointed teacher, Paul:
“Because if you acknowledge and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and in your heart believe that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart a person believes and is justified, and with the mouth he confesses and confirms his salvation.”
(Romans 10:9-10)
If we rely on trust in and believe Jesus, why wouldn’t we freely and frequently acknowledge and praise Him publicly? Why would we fear freely announcing our steadfast belief in and love for Jesus to our friends, relatives, and neighbors?
The answer is a tool of the evil one that this fine man overcame. THE FEAR OF WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK, which falls under the category that Jesus cautioned us about, “THE CARES OF THIS WORLD.” It is a fact that the reason the “Believers” of Jesus don’t openly and verbally confess Him before men is that they are afraid of what others think, especially in today’s society, when the name Jesus is considered toxic in the public lexicon.
So Garrett Nussmeier is a real Hero. Not because of what He did on the football field, but because of the courage and determined faith it took to overcome fear and proclaim His faith in Jesus.
Will We?
