Job was a man blessed on the level of Solomon. God had flooded him with audacious prosperity. He had a huge, beautiful home, a beautiful wife and children, vast amounts of land, and cattle. He was wealthy financially on the order of Elon Musk.
Job had many positive characteristics, but one that was his downfall. FEAR! With all the blessings that God had poured out upon him, Job had a nagging fear that for some unknown reason God would take them away.
Even though Job did not believe or have faith in God, God had faith in Job! When the evil one revealed his plan to destroy Job and his assertion that Job would reject God, God told the evil one to take his best shot and stated His belief that Job would not fold.
Tie these teachings from Jesus to the events in Job’s life:
“A good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks“
(Luke 6:45)
What was the evil in Job’s heart? Many people have asked me over the years what the worst sin is. UNBELIEF!
Unbelief is the only sin that Jesus has not forgiven and paid for with His blood. The symptoms and ingredients of Unbelief are Worry, Doubt, Anxiety, Fear, Neuroticism, and Sadness.
Job didn’t just have all of these; He had the worst kind of belief that is also prevalent today. He believed that God was capable of evil. He believed that God was a thief, a murderer, complicit in all evil, and an uncaring, callous, unfeeling, destroyer. Many of us have been taught the same.
The Truth is that God does not do evil! The evil we witness is caused by the lies and schemes of the evil one and those who believe and practice them. God has given us the free will to follow Him, or the evil one, and the toxic direction of our flesh.
“THERE IS ONE WHO COMES BUT TO KILL, STEAL, AND DESTROY, I HAVE COME THAT YOU MAY HAVE LIFE AND HAVE IT IN ABUNDANCE.“
(John 10:10)
Job feared that God would take away all the blessings that he had been given and destroy him and his family.
His fear caused all of that to happen. God did not do all of those things; the evil one, fueled by Job’s fearful agreement with the lies he had deposited in Job’s heart, caused Job’s complete ruin.
And Jesus answered them.” Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain,’ Be taken up and thrown into the sea and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.“
(Mark 11:22)
Tie that scripture to the deposits of the heart being spoken, and you will understand what happened to Job.
In his fleshly pain and suffering at the loss of everything he treasured, Job made a horrible, untrue accusation about God that he later rebuked. It has sadly been repeated down through the ages at almost every funeral.
” THE GOOD LORD GIVES AND THE GOOD LORD TAKES AWAY! BLESSED BE THE NAME OF THE LORD”
(Job 1:21)
That is the most horrid, bald-faced lie ever spoken against God. Imagine how it must hurt God to hear His children that He came to earth and died for, repeat it.
Later, when Job came to his senses, he rebuked this abomination by telling the Truth.
“THE THINGS I FEARED THE MOST HAVE HAPPENED TO ME!” (Job 3:25)
The things we fear come upon us because we believe them and speak them without doubt! And the reverse is true. The things we believe like the Great and Precious Promises of Jesus come upon us for the same reasons. What is in your heart?
The old cliché that fear and faith cannot coexist is true. One will overcome the other. We have the faith of Jesus, but we must use it to overcome our fears and the lies of our enemy.
In the words of the late, great theologian Loyd Skidmore:
“BELIEVE AND RECEIVE, OR DOUBT AND DO WITHOUT!”
