On the third day, there was a wedding in Cana, Galilee
Jesus, His mother, and the disciples were invited. The third day is mentioned twice in this teaching. At the end of the chapter, we read that Jesus promised that He would be resurrected on the third day after His earth suit was vacated. The third day is about newness of life and so is this report.
Pay attention to the INVITED part. It is the key to everything else that happened that day. When we invite Jesus into our lives by deciding to believe and believe in Him, an explosion of glory happens in our Spirits and in Heaven. The whole unseen world erupts with Joy and Gladness! We immediately receive forgiveness of every sin we have committed, past, present, and future. We receive our salvation at that very second and all of the Great and Precious promises of Jesus.
“Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep. I tell you that in the same way, there will be more rejoicing in Heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
Or what woman, having ten silver drachmas, if she loses one, does not light a lamp and sweep the house, and look carefully, and diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the silver coin I lost. Even so, I tell you, there is Joy among and in the presence of the angels of God over one wicked person who is saved!”
(Luke 15:7-10)
The wedding in Cana was a celebration, and the symbolism is that when the vessels (us) are filled, we are saved, and the celebration in Heaven is even grander.
We have all heard that Jesus turned water into wine, and in a technical sense, this is true. But in actuality, what happened was that Jesus turned eight EMPTY VESSELS into eight vessels filled with the finest wine the world would ever know.
You know the report Mary told Jesus about the wedding party being out of wine and insinuated that He should solve the problem.
Jesus told the servants to fill each of the thirty-gallon vessels with water. Why? Because in the next chapter, Jesus tells the messed-up Nicodemus that we must be born of water and of the Spirit in order to see the Kingdom of Heaven.
When the vessels were filled, they instantly turned into the finest wine the world would ever know. The vessels were there to contain water for the ritual of Spiritual cleansing. Many mistakenly believe that, because of the old Hebrew tradition of cleansing by water, we must also be baptized by water. However, we are already cleansed by the blood of Jesus when we believe and believe in Him.
Each vessel contained 30 gallons of wine. So Jesus created 240 gallons of it, a statement about the quality and quantity of God’s provision. Some of you have been to large wedding celebrations. Do you believe that the wealthiest celebrants ever provided 240 gallons of fine wine?
The point is that Jesus has already given us ALL THINGS that pertain to life and godliness, and He did not give sparingly, but in shocking abundance. When we believe and believe in Him and praise and thank Him, instead of asking Him for things He has already given us, we change from empty vessels into fine wine.
(2Peter1:1-4)
THE FINE WINE IS THE GOSPEL OF JESUS!
The choice to be empty vessels or filled with the fine wine of the Gospel of Jesus is ours. He has given us the free will to be either.
The more of the Gospel we consume, the finer we become.
Now that you know the meaning, may I challenge you to go back and meditate on John’s report in the second chapter of his Gospel? You will find it to be full of power and joy!
