Why ask some, is Christmas such a big deal?
Some of us grew up in toxic families where love was absent and insanity fueled by addictions ran amok. Christmas was the one day to look forward to with joy. Because that one day usually brought a modicum of peace and quiet from the perpetual war we lived in. With it came a brief window of hope and joy.
Some love the love that abounds during Christmas. Some love the wonderful music and decorations that reflect happiness and all of the focus on Jesus.
Many folks who are cheerful givers by nature love the opportunity to give to others. They feel the Spirit of giving in an almost visceral way. They know that our beloved Father in Heaven loved us so much that He Gave. He gave us the greatest gift of all time, Himself and eternal life with Him.
At no other time is God’s gift of eternal love, joy, mercy, grace, and forgiveness, happiness, and glory more evident than at the funeral of a believer.
This week, I was honored to do the graveside service of a man who, like all of us, was full of sin. Like all of us, he was hard bound for hell, because the price of any sin in thought or in deed is eternal separation from God in eternal torment without hope or grace, but the gift of God is everlasting life in His glorious Heaven.
Because of God’s great gift, he is now abounding in overwhelming joy in the presence of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The man gave his heart to Jesus four years ago and decided to believe, and believe in Him, which is all that God requires.
His family is rejoicing because, even though they mourn his absence and miss him terribly, they know where he is and who he is with. And that, my dear friends, is why Christmas is the biggest deal of all!
That is why we need to celebrate Christmas every day, but especially around the day that we have chosen to do it in abundance.
Holy Spirit and I give you permission to start the party.
Pay attention to the lyrics of the classic carols and hymns, some of which are more reflective of the “GOOD NEWS OF GREAT JOY WHICH SHALL BE TO ALL PEOPLE” than much of the dogma of religion, not the whiny modern ballads.
Especially, “Joy To The World” which reports that Jesus rules the world with “GRACE and TRUTH”
Every year about this time, my Mother would sing a little song from old England that went like this:
“Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat, would you please put a penny in the old man’s hat? If you haven’t got a penny, then a half penny will do. If you haven’t got a penny, then God bless you!”
In England, roast goose was the meal of choice at Christmas, and the giving message is valid even today.
Regardless of what some blue-haired “Thanksgiving first”, old works thumpers insist, it’s CHRISTMAS TIME!
