MOUNTAIN MOVING BELIEF
Have you ever known a person who knew very few scriptures and rarely talked about their relationship with God, but you could sense that they walked in a different level of belief? An extremely unshakeable, steadfast, unwavering, resolute, determined, intentional, stubborn level of belief? A level of beyond a shadow of a doubt unquestioning belief?
I am thinking about a mountain of a man who molded my early spiritual life, my Great Grandfather, Oscar Powell Whitley. Grandaddy was not rich, but he was prosperous. He plowed a mule until he was in his late eighties. He built his own beautiful home and four-hundred-acre farm. He owned a sawmill and was a sought-after surveyor. He had seven children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Granddaddy lived into his late nineties. He laughed loudly and often sang to himself and others. He loved gospel music and loved his Jesus with all of his heart.
Grandaddy prayed before every meal, not out of obligation but of gratitude. He would pray for twenty minutes and never ask Jesus for anything. He gave thanks, just like Jesus did when He prayed.
To Granddaddy, Jesus was as real as he was. Jesus and His teachings and promises weren’t idle words to him; they were absolute Truths. He gave God glory and thanks for everything he had or ever would have. He believed that Jesus had already given him everything.
His prayers would thank God/Jesus for crops, sharecroppers, food, home, health, family, and the many blessings God had lavished on him.
I do not believe Granddaddy ever saw a doctor. Jesus was his doctor, and his belief caused him to live long and prosper. His baby sister, my Great Aunt Stella, was just like him. She was funny, happy, blessed, and joyful to be near. She was the kindest, most caring, generous, loving, and gentlest woman I have ever known. I spent my summers working on her farm. She lived her life quietly and with a staunch belief like Granddaddy. Aunt Stella also lived into her late nineties.
In some ways, I think it was easier for them because they had no intense sources of unbelief bombarding them every day like we do. To them, God was absolutely real and their only hope.
Belief and Faith can be confusing because Jesus used them interchangeably at different times. Holy Spirit cleared up the matter in His teaching to Paul about Faith.
Holy Spirit taught us that Faith is a substance. “Now (In this present moment) Faith is the substance of things hoped for (joyfully celebrated) the evidence of things not seen.(The great and precious promises of Jesus), I summarize this as Faith is living in this present moment, joyfully celebrating the great and precious promises of Jesus regardless of what we see, hear, touch, taste or smell.
(Hebrews 11:1)
He taught us through Paul that faith is a free gift purchased by the blood of Jesus and given freely to those who are taught the Gospel of “Good News Of Great Joy, Which Shall Be To All People” and choose to believe it.
(Hebrews 11:1, Romans 10:10-17, 2Peter1:1)
Belief is the key that turns on the engine of our Faith. It is a choice that we make. Belief and unbelief are the two most powerful forces that exist other than God Himself.
Even if we give God control, He can not make us believe. Unbelief in Jesus is the only thing that can eternally separate us from God.
Belief and unbelief are two things that God can not change.
Belief causes us to receive all of the promises and gifts that Jesus died to give us: All things that pertain to life and godliness, Holy Spirit, Forgiveness of all of our sins, past, present, and future, healing and health, prosperity, His power, The power to speak things in and out of existence, Dominion over the evil one and all of his minions, His power, His joy and gladness, His peace and more.
(2Peter1;1-4, John 14:25, Zephaniah 3:17, Psalm 103:1-3, Isaiah 53:4-5, John 3:16-18, John 1:29, Hebrews 8:12, Hebrews 10:10-18, Revelation 1:5, John 10:10, Luke 6:38, 2Corinthians 9:6-14, Luke 10:18, John 14:12 John 17:13, John 14:27)
Belief is important; WHAT WE BELIEVE is more important! To live the life of prosperity, joy, peace, prosperity, and love that Jesus intended and paid for, we have to believe His Words.
Granddaddy had a different level of belief. So do the people I know who walk daily in the blessings of Jesus.
Steadfast, unshakeable, unwavering, determined, and refusing to not believe Jesus creates an intensely powerful, unbeatable force, KNOWLEDGE.
He never prayed that a person would be healed or delivered or blessed. He KNEW that His belief would produce the results He needed.
Granddaddy knew that Jesus healed him, gave him all his needs and desires, blessed him in all ways, produced his crops, and gave him all the money he needed. He knew that Holy Spirit was with him because Jesus gave him Holy Spirit. That is why I never heard him ask Jesus for anything but thanked Him for everything.
Jesus marveled (was astonished, stunned) twice, once at the belief of the Centurian, who was not a believer but a Roman politician, and at the unbelief of the people of Capernaum. The Centurion’s servant was healed immediately because of his belief. In Capernaum, Jesus could not do many mighty works because of the collective unbelief of the people.
The Centurian knew that the servant would be healed if Jesus came to the servant. The people of Capernaum mocked Jesus and did not believe Him.
(Luke 7:1-10, Mark 6;5-6)
Jesus was shocked and angered by the unbelief of His own disciples when they panicked about the storm on the sea of Galilee and asked Him if he did not care that they were going to drown and when they could not heal the epileptic boy because of their unbelief.
(Mark 4:38, Matthew 17:14-20)
Let’s look at the situation with the epileptic boy:
Jesus has just taken Peter, James, and John with Him to the mount of transfiguration. They saw Jesus in His glorified state, talking with Elijah and Moses, and fell dead because no human can withstand the glory of God. Jesus revived them and came down the mountain with them.
When they got to the bottom of the mountain, they saw this situation unfolding before them:
“And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to Him and kneeling before him, said, ‘Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.’
And Jesus answered, ‘O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.’ And Jesus rebuked the demon (epilepsy), and the boy was healed instantly.
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, ‘Why could we not cast it out?’ He said to them, ‘Because of your little Faith. For truly, I tell you that if you have Faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move, AND NOTHING WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU”.
(Matthew 17:14-17)
Why was Jesus so upset? Probably at the unbelief of the disciples to whom He had given the power to heal the sick, possibly at the people He had taught that they could do the same works that He did if they steadfastly believed in Him. Certainly, when Jesus railed about a faithless and twisted generation, He spoke about unbelief.
(Luke 9:1, John 14:12)
This report is included in three of the four gospels, with slightly different endings. In one account, the father replies to Jesus: ‘I have belief, but help my unbelief.’
(Mark 9:24)
Sorry, sir, that is one thing that Jesus can not do. Belief and unbelief are choices that we alone make.
In Mark’s famous report that extended the mustard seed teaching, Jesus again emphasized the power of belief. You will surely be familiar with this message from Jesus if you follow our teachings.
It may seem repetitive, but it is urgent. Few folks, even those who designate themselves as believers, ingest, accept, believe, or act on it. What shakes my head every time is when folks claim to believe some of Jesus’s promises, such as John 3:16, yet reject others. I don’t understand how this can be.
“Have Faith in God. Truly, truly, I ( in the person and authority of the Great I Am.) Say to you, WHOEVER (the emphasis on the word WHOEVER is intentional. Religion has taught errantly since Jesus spoke them that the promises of Jesus were only for His disciples.) SAYS to this mountain(whatever mountain is in your life),’ Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and DOES NOT DOUBT IN HIA HEART, BUT BELIEVES THAT WHAT HE SAYS WILL COME TO PASS, IT WILL BE DONE FOR HIM!”
(Mark 11:22-23)
As I have, you have undoubtedly heard skeptical, spiritually blind, and deaf non-believers say: “I have never seen a mountain move!” My response to that is, “And because until you choose to believe, you never will.”
So, the belief that Jesus describes in this teaching is a different type of belief. It is the belief that we wrote of earlier. It is a staunch, steadfast, entrenched, stubborn, adamant, intentional, determined refusal to doubt, question, argue with, debate, or deny the promises of Jesus in the authority, power, glory, and person of God.
This type of belief that moves mountains and receives the glorious works and Words of our King of Kings has become intransigent knowledge. It is belief without doubt.
Like Smokey The Bear says: “Only You” can prevent forest fires. Only we can choose to believe without doubt. It is our work to reject doubt and unbelief.
It is up to us to evolve belief into inarguable, unquestionable knowledge. I urge you to make that choice today, preemptively, before you need a “miracle.”
