Confession 101

Jesus NEVER commanded us to confess our sins! That notion came from a statement from John that is patently obvious on the order of “duh” comment.

It has been mistaught and misunderstood ever since John wrote it. He was not quoting Jesus! He was merely

opining a thing that he believed. Here it is:

If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just [true to His own nature and promises], and will forgive our sins and cleanse us continually from all unrighteousness [our wrongdoing, everything not in conformity with His will and purpose].

(1John 1:19 Amplified)

The word will, is evidence that John clearly was speaking to those who have not accepted Jesus as their King.

Why? Because everyone who has Jesus has been forgiven of all of their sins once and for all by the blood of Jesus.

And in accordance with this will [of God] we [who believe in the message of salvation] have been sanctified [that is, set apart as holy for God and His purposes] through the offering of the body of Jesus once for all !!

(Hebrews 10:10-11)

That written, why in the world would we ask God to forgive us?

Jesus never required us to confess our sins. Why? Don’t we know that He sees our sins? Why would He want us to

remind Him of what He knows but has chosen to forget since He already forgave us?

The only thing we need to confess is our belief in Jesus!

because if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord [recognizing His power, authority, and majesty as God], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart a person believes [in Christ as Savior] resulting in his justification [that is, being made righteous—being freed of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to God]; and with the mouth he acknowledges and confesses [his faith openly], resulting in and confirming [his] salvation.”

(Romans 10:9-10)

King David was the best confessor of all time.

If you want to know what Jesus would like us to confess, read this confession from the master confessor:

Bless and affectionately praise the Lord, O my soul,
And all that is [deep] within me, bless His holy name.
Bless and affectionately praise the Lord, O my soul,
And do not forget any of His benefits;

Who forgives
all your sins,

Who heals all your diseases;

Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you [lavishly] with lovingkindness and tender mercy;

Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the [soaring] eagle.

The Lord executes righteousness
And justice for all the oppressed.

He made known His ways [of righteousness and justice] to Moses,
His acts to the children of Israel.

The Lord is merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in compassion and loving-kindness.

He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.

He has not dealt with us according to our sins [as we deserve],
Nor rewarded us [with punishment] according to our wickedness.

For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear and worship Him [with awe-filled respect and deepest reverence].

As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

Just as a father loves his children,
So the Lord loves those who fear and worship Him [with awe-filled respect and deepest reverence].

For He knows our [mortal] frame;
He remembers that we are [merely] dust.

As for man, his days are like grass;
For the wind passes over it and it is no more,
And its place knows it no longer.

But the loving-kindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who [reverently] fear (Respect) Him,
And His righteousness to children’s children, To those who honor and keep His covenant,

And remember to do His commandments. (David is speaking to the yet unsaved Jews about the Laws of Moses which only applied to them, and but for the time that Jesus was crucified and the veil of the temple was torn into from the top to the bottom and to us about Jesus’ commandments.)

The Lord has established His throne in the heavens,
And His sovereignty rules over all [the universe].

Bless the Lord, you His angels,
You mighty ones who do His commandments,

Obeying the voice of His word!

Bless the Lord, all you His hosts,
You who serve Him and do His will.

Bless the Lord, all you works of His, in all places of His dominion;
Bless and affectionately praise the Lord, O my soul!

(Psalm 103)

What a beautiful confession. What Jesus wants is for us to praise and eulogize Him in the exact same way. He wants us to confess how WE feel about Him.

The only time Jesus ever asked for a confession was when He asked the disciples, who they thought He was.
