The “Shooting Holy Cows” chapter begins with an old legend whose veracity is highly questionable but is very entertaining. As the story goes, the baseball great Mickey Mantle and his famous coach, Billy Martin, are drinking heavily in a bar in Dallas when Mickey tells Martin that they should go hunting.

He calls a friend with a ranch and asks permission to go deer hunting on his land.

It’s around two in the morning when they get to the ranch. Mickey goes to the door while Martin waits in the truck with the guns. The farmer welcomes Mickey and tells him he has an old mule that needs to be put down but doesn’t have the heart to do it. He asks Mickey to shoot the mule before they go hunting.

Seeing the opportunity to prank Martin, Mickey returns to the truck, pretends to be really angry, and reports that his friend has changed his mind and will not let them hunt. He pulls out his gun. Martin asks what Mickey is going to do. Mickey replies that he will get revenge by shooting the man’s mule. He grabs his gun and goes to shoot the mule.

While Mickey is loading up to shoot the mule, he hears several rifle shots and looks for Martin. “What are you doing, Billy?” he asks. “Im fixing that, Jackass,” replies Billy. “I am shooting his cows.”

That is my cow shooting story.

Religion has indoctrinated us with many false beliefs about our relationship with God, that is what I mean by “Holy Cows”. It is urgent that we reject and eject these from our minds and Spirits because they prevent us from walking in the full, glorious, and joy-filled lives that Jesus died to give us.

In our last message, we wrote about some of these holy cows, including: “God is in control,” “The good Lord gives, and the good Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord,” “Sometimes God says no,” The Lord works in mysterious ways,” “You must repent and ask God for forgiveness,” “We must do this and that,” and “Mortal sins.” All of them are man-made hooey. We gave the specific scriptures, debunking them all.

Today, Holy Spirit lead us to drill down on some of this errant teaching. Let’s take a deeper look at one in particular. “Mortal Sins”. When most folks hear that term, they think Catholic. I assure you that there are many Protestants who have been taught and believe it as well.

According to religious dogma and tradition, a mortal sin is one that, unless repented, will send you to hell. The same dogma teaches that if you should commit one of these whoppers and not repent (whatever they define that to be, usually confessing your whopper to some religious authority without regard for the fact that Holy Spirit taught us that there is no mediator between God and Man except Jesus and the fact that Jesus ordered us to call no man on earth father because we have one Father and He is in Heaven.) God will throw you into hell for all of eternity.

Here is a list of religions’ “mortal sins”:

Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Anger, Pride, Envy, and Suicide. Many believe that there are more of these, such as LGBTQ, Abortion, Adultery, and not mastering one’s domain (Seinfeld reference.) and many others.

“Oh no! I ate a box of ice cream. I practiced gluttony and forgot to confess and repent!!!” “I am doomed”.

Please don’t laugh. Many grew up hearing this blather from a pulpit and buying into it because we were taught and believed that a man with a white collar and or behind a pulpit must be sent from God, be infallible, and always teach the Truth. This was so even though  we were aware of their humanity and sins

It was not an accident. It was a design. The concept is that religion and the evil one need you to live in guilt to pull you around by the nose. The Truth is that in God’s eyes if you believe in and believe Jesus, you are guilty of nothing because He has already paid for your sins. If you break the laws of society, however, society will exact retribution up to and including revenge and jail time.

To understand the nonsense of “mortal sins,” one needs to look no further than the Words of Jesus Himself.

Therefore, I ( Jesus speaking in the authority of the Great I Am) tell you, every sin will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

(Matthew 12:31)

Guilt-pounding religious dogma has perpetrated the concept that there are many ways to grieve the Holy Spirit. Truthfully, there is only one. The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit that Jesus referred to is when the Pharisees and Sadducees claimed that the Spirit in Jesus was a demon. This declaration does not apply to you unless you call Holy Spirit a demon.

Why, you ask, would religious leaders want us to walk in continual guilt? The answer is simple. So we must come to them to assuage or cancel our guilt. If we go to them, we will naturally bring our money along with us.

The worst problem with binding your flock with guilt is that it naturally makes them avoid God. Would you want to hang out with a flesh person who was bound to punish you? Of course not. Thus, why would you want anything to do with an angry, punishing, judgmental, condemning, and obviously unloving God?

Guilt is the most worthless of all emotions. Guilt, fear, and unbelief are the most comfortable and successful tools of the evil one.

Think about these scriptures and ask yourself how they align with the rubbish you have been taught about your sin and guilt.

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness;

He will quiet you with His love and rejoice over you with loud singing”.

(Zephaniah 3:17)

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me; bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul,

and forget not all His many benefits, WHO FORGIVES ALL OF YOUR SINS, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, Who satisfies you with good

so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

(Psalm 103:1-3)

He (God) does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities, because as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His steadfast love toward those who believe Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, the Lord shows compassion to those who love Him.

(Psalm 103: 10-13)

John the Baptist, upon seeing Jesus:

Behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.”

(John 1:29)

From Peter, the eyewitness and earhearer of the events and teachings of Jesus’s life:

He (Jesus) Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.

By His wounds, you have been healed. Because you were straying like sheep but have now returned to the Shepherd and the Overseer of your souls.

(1 Peter 2:24-25)

Here, Paul quotes the messages from Holy Spirit to the Prophets about the promised new covenant, which was ushered in by the sacrifice of Jesus. The meaning of the scriptures is that God has chosen not only to forgive but also to be unable to remember our sins.

I WILL BE MERCIFUL TOWARDS THEIR INIQUITIES, AND I WILL REMEMBER THEM NO MORE.”

(Hebrews 8:12)

But when this Priest (Jesus) had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since that time, he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool For by one sacrifice, he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. (Those who believe in and believe Jesus) Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this.

First, He says:

“This is the covenant I will make with them

after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws (His Words, His Gospel) in their hearts and write them on their minds.”

Then he adds:

Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”

And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

(Hebrews 10:10-18)

And Finally, A message to us from Holy Spirit through Paul. It defines love. Jesus is love:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude; it is not self-seeking; it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the Truth. Love bears all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.”

(1 Corinthians 13:1-8)

Jesus keeps no record of wrongs. That Truth flies in the face of all the religious teachings we have endured. It rejects the false picture of God as a record-keeping, angry God mad at the last sin we committed and is out to get retribution.

Perhaps the most persistent cliche, which denies the scriptures, is that WE MUST confess and repent our sins. This is because, in the mind of the peddlers of this false narrative, dying on the cross was not a high enough and thorough enough payment for them. Therefore, we must find another more effective way to atone for our sins because God in all three persons is blind and deaf and does not know the bad things we do.

SHOOT HOLY COWS! How? Learn the real True Gospel of Jesus! Eat His flesh to learn, consume, believe, and put His Words into action, making them the most essential things in your life. Jesus promised us that if we continue in His Words, we will know the Truth and the Truth will make us free. One of the things that His Words and the Truth make us free from is the many Holy Cows we have been taught.
